The Piedmont Orthopaedic Research Foundation is a non-profit foundation created
in 1995 to support:
- Hip and knee replacement research used to create better patient outcomes
- Free surgeries and supplies for disadvantaged patients in developing countries
Research
The Piedmont Orthopaedic Research Foundation is shaping the future of joint replacement
surgeries by using advanced clinical software to track and analyze the outcomes
of hip and knee replacement patients. Since the Foundation’s inception, the demographics,
range of motion data, healthcare history and surgical details of more than 2,000
patients has been collected and analyzed to determine which implants and medications
work best for different types of patients.
The Foundation’s research is shared with other orthopaedic surgeons, health care
providers and organizations across the country through inclusion in medical journals
and presentations. It also is shared with joint implant manufacturers who are
improving their products based on this and other information like it from across
the country.
The research conducted by the Foundation is leading to industry-wide standards
for joint implants and will improve the joint replacement process for future generations.
Outreach
While the research performed by the Foundation is leading to improvements for
future generations, the outreach arm of the Foundation is helping repair debilitating
diseased joints and giving back normal lives to young people who suffer from genetic
orthopaedic conditions.
Annually, POA joins other renowned physicians to participate in Operation Walk, a non-profit volunteer medical service organization that provides free surgical
treatment for patients in developing countries who have no access to care for
debilitating bone and joint conditions.
During the trips, the surgeons perform approximately 55 free joint replacement
surgeries, tackle complicated orthopaedic cases, give much-needed orthopaedic
supplies to patients, and educate in-country orthopaedic surgeons and clinical
staff about advanced treatment techniques for joint diseases.
How You Can Help
While physicians donate their time to Operation Walk, and medical companies donate
surgical implants and supplies, you can help by either making a monetary donation
to help offset travel costs, or you can donate gently used orthopaedic equipment,
such as:
- Compression Stockings
- Walkers
- Crutches
- Canes
- Elevated Toilet Seats
- Toiletries
- Blankets
- Pillows
- Over-the-coutner pain medication
The Foundation’s work in research and outreach is limited only by our imaginations
and funding. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about the Foundation
and its work, call POA at 864-234-7654 and find out the many ways you can help
others…get movin’!
